Tärnsjö Tannery

Tärnsjö Garveri is located in northwest Uppland, just two miles from Gysinge. A more than 150-year-old company that is thriving more than ever and which largely works in the same way as it always has.

The big hides are prepared in the same way as tanners have always done, using bark as the tanning agent. Skilled saddlers make the most exclusive briefcases and laptop bags alongside saddles and reins, gloves and boots.

Tärnsjö competes with international tanneries on the world market. Louis Vuitton has long bought its leather from Tärnsjö, as have Brooks in England and a number of other famous brand manufacturers.

It traces the company’s development from tannery for the surrounding parishes’ farms, through the period when chrome was used as a tanning agent, to today’s environmentally conscious group with a focus on quality, where the language is English and where they cooperate with forestry companies to obtain a domestic tanning agent.

Shavings basket

Chip basket braided according to traditional craft methods from hand-crafted pine shavings. A further development of the sieves and sweep baskets of hand-cut shavings that were made in earlier times. The baskets are still made today in the same traditional way with hand-crafted and sanded “bars” as they are called. A versatile basket to use on the excursion, picking berries and mushrooms or to store your handiwork. A genuine craft from Mora where the tradition of basket making still stretches back to the 18th century.

This basket is diagonally braided, with a square bottom and rounded sides. The handles are made of shavings and the edge of the basket is nailed with nubb as was customary on baskets from Dalarna.

In chip baskets, all chips have the same thickness and flexibility, unlike most other braiding methods where the braiding material is softer and thinner than the material they are braided into. Traditionally, the shavings were split with an axe and knife. From the end of the 18th century, planed shavings also became common, especially in southern Sweden. The most common types of chip baskets are diagonally braided and straight braided. There has also been a variant with scissor braiding or cypress braiding.

Mural “balsamic”

One of Gysinge’s most popular products over the years is the roller blinds with the magnificent hand-painted “balsamines”. The motif dates from the last half of the 19th century and, through later research, can be attributed with certainty to the diligent Rättvik painter Mats Anders Olsson (1824-1878), who supplied the villages around Siljan with his murals, but who also went on working trips to Hälsingland with his wife Annika’s Brita Ersdotter (1833-1912), where together they sold hand-painted roller blinds on paper with this particular pattern. The Hälsingland farms, with their many windows, were big customers for hand-painted roller blinds.

We have now picked up Anders and Brita’s colorful balsamines again, this time in the form of painted wall panels on real gray foam board in pasted sheets. The wall panels are intended for anyone who wants to put up one or more atmospheric murals in their house or apartment, much like modern posters on the walls.

The wall panels can, of course, also be framed as wall panels, or as paintings. At the same time, craft enthusiasts can study the technique of gluing sheets of gray paper together (each wall panel consists of at least four sheets) and the fascinating technique of painting with matt linseed oil paint.
