Tärnsjö Garveri is located in northwest Uppland, just two miles from Gysinge. A more than 150-year-old company that is thriving more than ever and which largely works in the same way as it always has.

The big hides are prepared in the same way as tanners have always done, using bark as the tanning agent. Skilled saddlers make the most exclusive briefcases and laptop bags alongside saddles and reins, gloves and boots.

Tärnsjö competes with international tanneries on the world market. Louis Vuitton has long bought its leather from Tärnsjö, as have Brooks in England and a number of other famous brand manufacturers.

It traces the company’s development from tannery for the surrounding parishes’ farms, through the period when chrome was used as a tanning agent, to today’s environmentally conscious group with a focus on quality, where the language is English and where they cooperate with forestry companies to obtain a domestic tanning agent.

Mural “balsamic”

One of Gysinge’s most popular products over the years is the roller blinds with the magnificent hand-painted “balsamines”. The motif dates from the last half of the 19th century and, through later research, can be attributed with certainty to the diligent Rättvik painter Mats Anders Olsson (1824-1878), who supplied the villages around Siljan with his murals, but who also went on working trips to Hälsingland with his wife Annika’s Brita Ersdotter (1833-1912), where together they sold hand-painted roller blinds on paper with this particular pattern. The Hälsingland farms, with their many windows, were big customers for hand-painted roller blinds.

We have now picked up Anders and Brita’s colorful balsamines again, this time in the form of painted wall panels on real gray foam board in pasted sheets. The wall panels are intended for anyone who wants to put up one or more atmospheric murals in their house or apartment, much like modern posters on the walls.

The wall panels can, of course, also be framed as wall panels, or as paintings. At the same time, craft enthusiasts can study the technique of gluing sheets of gray paper together (each wall panel consists of at least four sheets) and the fascinating technique of painting with matt linseed oil paint.

Window glass 1850-1930, white

MADE-TO-ORDER PRODUCT

Genuine hand-blown window glass has long been in short supply in the building industry.

Lots of more or less bad imitations have seen the light of day; Antique glass, renovation glass, restoration glass, machine antique, genuine antique glass, cultural glass. The names have been as misleading as the products have been dubious.

For example, the imitation glass has often been too thick. The glass has also been too heavy. Thick glass weighs a lot and wears down the hinges. The glass has been machine-made, giving it an artificial appearance, often for example with one side completely flat and the other with a ‘hand-blown’ texture. The supply of window glass has simply been driven by commercial, not cultural, interests and the result has been the same.

We have been working for 13 years to develop a new way of making window glass. Only now are we 100% satisfied with the result. We have worked exclusively with extremely skilled glassblowers from the old tribe.

We now have window panes in stock that are made using exactly the same technique as before, i.e. blown by hand (mouth-blown) and using the cylinder method. You can’t tell our new glass from the old, because there is no difference!

Every pane of glass is, of course, individual. There are all the typical irregularities in the glass, such as small blisters, streaks and everything that goes with hand-blown glass. And because the sand used to make the glass is not 100% pure, the glass is not completely “white” as it used to be.

In our white glass, for example, there is a slight tendency towards gray. The only thing that distinguishes our new glass from the old is actually – age! Well, one more thing, the new panes are not scratched, as old ones tend to be after centuries of window cleaning and careless cleaning.

Send us an email, [email protected], with the number of squares and dimensions and we will get back to you with a quote for price and delivery time.
