Gysinge’s floor limestone, made in the well-known island tradition. Gysinge limestone has a unique 18th century surface treatment and a rustic look with an uneven surface and naturally broken edges. The surface is honed to the velvety feel that characterizes a stone floor naturally worn over centuries. This appearance makes the stone a perfect fit in a cultural-historical setting. With its rough character, this limestone, thanks to its thinner-than-normal thickness, is also sought after for new flooring in modern kitchens, hallways and bathrooms. Its rustic appearance means that it can also be used under and in front of tiled stoves, fireplaces, stoves and fireplaces. The limestone is manufactured especially for Gysinge.

Limestone from Öland.

Two colors are available: grey and red. The names of the colors are old and can be a bit misleading. For example, red is more of a rusty brown, while gray ranges from solid gray to mottled in various shades of gray.

Laying

The stone is laid by tradition without conscious color matching. Red and gray have been mixed without any thought of pattern. If you wish, you can of course lay the floor in a checkerboard pattern with alternating gray and red stone. The stone has a smooth underside that is suitable for laying in sand, mortar or fix. A new floor is best laid on gypsum flooring, then underfloor heating, then fix. The stone is not usually grouted, but the tiles are traditionally laid only edge to edge. If you still want a joint, it should be as narrow as possible, preferably no more than a couple of millimeters wide and preferably in a light gray color, like lime mortar. Wooden plinths are recommended in cultural heritage environments. The stone can be cut with an angle grinder. Cut edges can be rounded with a file.

Maintenance

Vacuuming and wet wiping or scrubbing with linseed oil soap and cold water. If you want, you can treat the stone with floor oil, which gives a water-repellent and glossy surface. The oil also makes the stone darker, if you are looking for a darker shade.
