Standard dimensions for kerosene lamps were established in the mid-19th century and were based on the size of the kerosene burner. Measurements are given in lines and line measurements are counted in 1/12 inch. Thus, 1 line equals 1/12″ (inch). The line number is determined in proportion to the brightness of the lamp and the higher the line number the higher the luminous intensity.

Kerosene lamp Skeppsholmen, a larger version of the popular Koholmen. The oil housing is in mouth-blown clear glass. The original Koholmen model was already in the Karlskrona lamp factory’s range at the end of the 19th century, but reached a wider audience in the 1950s.
